The fifth Winter Olympics were held in St. Moritz. In June 1939 the organizing committee informed the IOC that given the controversial status of the ski instructors it was not willing to organize the ski races. St. Moritz was then denied the right to organize and the games were again designated to Garmisch Partenkirchen. A short time later the Games were canceled due to the outbreak of World War II.
