Description

With speed skating, although the participants start in pairs, they are actually racing against the clock. All competitions are held on a 400 metre indoor or outdoor track. There are short distances (500 and 1000 meter), a middle distance (1500 meter) and long distances (3000, 5000, and 10000 meter). Only once in Olympic history had there been held a speed skating championship for all-round skaters over the 500, 1500, 5000 and 10000 metres and that was in Chamonix in 1924.
